What does a home battery do?
The electricity from your solar panels can go two ways: you use it straight away, or it goes onto the grid. The second is rarely the best choice. For what you feed in, your supplier pays you a feed-in tariff, but it is a good deal lower than what you pay to buy that same electricity back in the evening. Every kilowatt-hour you use yourself is therefore worth more than one you send away.
A home battery solves that. What your panels generate in excess during the day goes into the battery instead of onto the grid. In the evening, when your panels stop and you cook, do the washing and watch TV, you draw it back out. Without a battery, an average household uses about 30% of what it generates itself. With a battery, that rises to around 70%.
